South Sudan Seals USD9.98M UN Deal to Battle Floods, Boost Water
(MENAFN) The government of South Sudan has formalized a $9.98 million pact with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) to undertake a critical initiative focused on mitigating flood damage and strengthening water infrastructure. The accord, signed on Tuesday, is a component of the World Bank-supported Regional Climate Resilience Program for Eastern and Southern Africa.
This year-long endeavor is set to provide relief to populations grappling with flooding and water scarcity in the states of Eastern Equatoria, Jonglei, Lakes, and Upper Nile. The project's scope includes the restoration of existing dikes and drainage networks, the repair of hand pumps and water yards, and the distribution of essential fishing equipment. Furthermore, the program is designed to generate temporary employment opportunities for local residents.
According to the terms of the agreement, UNOPS will be responsible for a range of tasks, from conducting technical evaluations to managing procurement, overseeing construction, and engaging with the affected communities. The organization will also ensure that all environmental and social protections are meticulously upheld.
Achier Manyuat John, the undersecretary of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, emphasized the government's dedication to transparency and responsible oversight. Likewise, in a separate statement, Petronella Halwiindi, the UNOPS country manager for South Sudan, confirmed that the initiative aims to provide lasting infrastructure to safeguard communities and improve their ability to withstand climate-related challenges.
