Rwanda Accepts Receiving U.S. Deportees

(MENAFN) Rwanda has consented to receive up to 250 individuals expelled from the United States, according to an announcement made by the government on Tuesday.

The East African country now joins other African nations—Eswatini and South Sudan—in accepting deported individuals, following a shift by the Trump administration to relocate migrants, allegedly labeled as criminals or gang members, to countries within the African continent.

Yolande Makolo, the spokesperson for the Rwandan government, explained that the nation's willingness to participate stems partly from its history of displacement.

She noted that nearly every Rwandan household has experienced the trauma of forced movement, and that the country’s fundamental social principles are built on "reintegration and rehabilitation."

“Under the agreement, Rwanda has the ability to approve each individual proposed for resettlement. Those approved will be provided with workforce training, health care, and accommodation support to jump start their lives in Rwanda, giving them the opportunity to contribute to one of the fastest growing economies in the world over the last decade,” Makolo stated.

In June, the U.S. Supreme Court gave the green light to the Trump administration to send migrants to third-party nations without affording them the opportunity to prove they might face danger.

When asked for comments, Rwanda’s Foreign Minister, Olivier Nduhungirehe, declined to share specifics of the arrangement, including what Rwanda stands to gain from the agreement.

However, a source who requested anonymity mentioned that the U.S. might compensate Rwanda through a financial grant, according to a news agency.
